The usual design for a Festschrift almost insures that its contents will be less than wholly up to the needs of the occasion. The celebrated man is unlikely to be equalled in wisdom and acts by all of his students. Therefore, if they are the source of the papers to be read and published in his honor, some contributions will be laurel leaves, but some may be thorns.
An exception is the symposium that honored Sir Macfarlane Burnet in September 1969, the month of his seventieth birthday. Having not been designed by this formula, it is not burdened by the
