Serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations were determined by specific radioimmunoassays in 30 virile men ages 18 to 43 with no history of orchitis and with testes of normal size but with sperm counts between 100,000 and 40 million/ml, and in 40 age-matched normal men. Mean ± SEM for FSH in the idiopathic oligospermics was 29 ± 3.3 µg/100 ml of human pituitary gonadotropin reference standard LER 907 and in the controls was 13 ± 0.9 µg LER 907/100 ml. The increased serum FSH concentration in oligospermics relative to controls was highly significant (P < 0.001).
