Isotopic labeling of platelets was used to study the survival and sequestration patterns in patients with various thrombocytopenic disorders. Prognostic factors for splenectomy were determined. ABO Rh compatible pooled isologous platelet concentrates were labeled with 51Cr and infused intravenously. Simultaneous scans of the spleen and liver were obtained by use of the Anger camera and 1600 Channel Analyzer. Geometrically equivalent areas of 51Cr activity were counted over the spleen and liver and ratios obtained at various time intervals. Platelet counts and 51Cr platelet activity were determined at appropriate intervals. Splenectomy was performed on 12 of 22 patients, all of whom
