To the editor: In their editorial on antitrypsin deficiency Falk and Briscoe (Ann Intern Med 72:427-429, 1970) point out that intrapulmonary proteolysis might be due to either decreased inhibitor or excess enzyme. They suggest that air pollutants might injure pulmonary cells and increase the rate of enzyme release.
Ozone is a major oxidant pollutant. When rabbits and mice were exposed to concentrations higher than those usually noted in the atmosphere, the amount of lysozyme which could be extracted from bronchial secretions decreased linearly with ozone concentration.
