Paul wood was a master clinician, teacher, and clinical investigator during a period of rapid advance in cardiovascular investigation, diagnosis, and therapy. The first two editions of Diseases of the Heart and Circulation allowed physicians and patients throughout the world to benefit from his uncommon ability to integrate a sophisticated knowledge of normal and abnormal physiology with a common-sense approach to clinical problems. It is fortunate that Walter Somerville and other friends and students of Dr. Wood undertook the task of completing the revision of this third edition, which had been started by Dr. Wood before his untimely death.
