Cardiac pacing and cardioversion are two of the most dramatic therapeutic advances of the past decade. Comprehensive reviews of pacing as a mode of therapy andof pacemakers as devices appear in such recent publications as "Advances in Cardiac Pacemakers" in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences 167(2):515-1075, 1969, and Cardiac Pacemakers by Siddons and Sowton, Charles C Thomas, Publisher, Springfield, Ill., 1969. Rather than duplicate these reviews, the authors have provided new insights, derived largely from broad personal experience, into human electrophysiology based on an analysis of the expected and unexpected pacemaker-induced rhythms.
