By going beyond the literal confines of his title to sketch out Arab medicine and the schools of Salerno and Montpellier, Dr. Talbot is able to introduce the reader to medical education, medical science, and practice; hospitals; hygiene; and epidemics of western Europe in the Middle Ages with a scope that would not have been attainable if he had confined himself strictly to the field of main focus, English medicine. He writes for the general reader and for the student of history or medicine who wants a longer and wider account than he can get from the standard one-volume histories
