This well-known yearly collection of succinct, critical review papers is still a bargain this year even at its new, inflation-escalated price. Virtually all the 27 reviews are pertinent to concepts or practice of clinical medicine; a few might have been more aptly placed in one of the Annual Reviews devoted to the medical sciences. Regular readers of the Annual Review of Medicine are very aware that these review papers are not of the how-to-do-it species; rather, they tell us what we know and where we stand in various fields of recent advance.
