Some of the antibiotics that are found as residues in food consumed by man are evaluated as to their potential toxicity to the user. Monographs are presented on antibiotics used for food preservation, veterinary reasons, and those that gain accidental or coincidental addition to food. The monograph describes the class of antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, macrolides, penicillins, polyenes, polypeptides, tetracyclines; indicates their use in the food industry and veterinary medicine; and gives residue information and biological data with regard to absorption from the GI tract, clinical observations, sensitivity data, allergic reactions, and microbial resistance.
