The news media have become important in the affairs of both medicine and science. Thoughtful formulation of policy in connection with them is overdue if serious ethical and moral problems are to be anticipated. The problem is delineated in several important aspects, such as celebrity building, the press' right to know, the importance of prestige, and priorities. The established mechanisms of communication and some weaknesses and strengths are considered, and some suggestions for improvement are made.
