To the editor: The recent article by Hahn and Beaty (1) caused some interest in the validity of the bacterial sample obtained by the use of a transtracheal aspiration. As a result we have begun a study on autopsy cases by comparing a postmortem tracheal aspirate with the routine postmortem lung cultures. The plastic catheter was inserted as described by Hahn and Beaty. The catheter was left in place, its position was later noted, and the aspirate culture was compared with the appropriate lung culture.
