To the editor: Gelfand and Krone (Ann Intern Med 72:903-907, 1970) in an otherwise stimulating article leave us in the dark in regard to the "additional environmental factors" to which they briefly allude: the family lived "in a section of Germany where the water supply and sewage were poorly controlled hygienically."
It would be of direct importance to know if the description of the water supply was that of the patient or that of the local health officials. Of further interest to German readers of the ANNALS is the location of this section of Germany, so observations may be collected
