Interest in the metabolism of five-carbon sugars has markedly increased during the past several years. This collection of the 39 papers presented at the symposium on pentoses and pentitols held August 1967 in Hakone, Japan, reflects this growing interest and provides further evidence for the importance of these compounds in mammalian metabolism.
The relationship between polyol metabolism and the major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism is clearly reviewed by Horecker, and excellent discussions of the uronic acid pathway of glucose metabolism are provided by Touster and Hollman.
