Therapeutic milieu is a form of treatment not usually provided for the convalescent general medical or surgical patient. A 20-bed ward has been developed to provide this for patients whose disease or injury has stabilized but who still require hospitalization in a general community hospital. Details of the structure and function of such a milieu are described and illustrated with case histories. Implications of such a ward as a setting for teaching are discussed.
