Alert readers of the Annals may have noticed that the key words on the abstracts in the Medical News section have been appearing in a new format, with a different vocabulary, since July of this year. Previously the key words had been those supplied by the authors of the abstracted papers, with some terms added or modified by the editors. Beginning with the July issue, the key words have been drawn from the vocabulary developed by the National Library of Medicine for compilation of Index Medicus. This vocabulary is titled Medical Subject Headings, and its terms are known acronymically as
