Within the past 2 decades dramatic strides have been made in our understanding of the mechanisms by which erythropoiesis is regulated. The recognition of control by a humoral factor and the identification of this biologically active substance placed a powerful tool, the erythropoietin assay, in the hands of investigators. As a result a vast amount of information has been generated. In their book the authors review the extensive literature of the field from a historical perspective and integrate the mass of data to provide the reader with an accounting of current concepts about erythropoietin and the regulation of erythropoiesis.
