Drug abuse is a major public health problem and deserves a comprehensive treatise reviewing the difficulties encountered by governments in their legislative actions and the development of treatment programs.
This volume does review the experiences of the United States and Britain in their attempts to cope with the rising incidence of abuse. The differences between the two systems and the results of the various attempts to decrease the supply are quite evident from the sections written by experienced workers in both countries. Especially interesting are the descriptions of the many "self-help" groups staffed by ex-addicts which have been innovative contributions
