Thrombotic disease is one of the major health challenges today. Anticoagulants have had only limited success. Naturally occurring proteins such as streptokinase or urokinase, which activate plasmin and promote fibrinolysis, are expensive and require parenteral administration. Although of some therapeutic value, these agents are unsuitable for the prevention of clot formation. This book reviews and updates the search for synthetic, inexpensive oral agents that would activate the natural fibrinolytic system and might be of use in both the prevention and therapy of thromboembolic diseases.
