To the editor: Question 250 (page 896 of the December ANNALS) states that "the pleural exudate shows numerous chains of Gram-positive cocci." Yet your "correct" answer (A) presupposes that these organisms are staphylococci. This is an error. Staphylococci do not come in chains. Gram-positive cocci in chains are streptococci. Hence the correct answer is (B), since penicillin is the drug of choice for streptococcic infections.
