On January 6 the House Select Committee on Crime recommended to Congress new legislation for the control of crime (1). Along with other measures, it asked for legal restrictions on manufacture and distribution of the amphetamines. Among the witnesses who had testified before the Committee during the prereport deliberations (2) and provided support for the Committee's recommendations was Dr. George Edison, Director, Student Health Service, University of Utah. He was not alone in his views. Other authorities also called attention to misuses of the amphetamines by the public and by physicians and asked for legal controls on the amphetamines. Dr.
