The primary title of the book promises much. The subtitle gives the prospective reader some idea of how much less there is in this book than he would hope. It is a brief psychoanalytic essay proposing to explain some of the personality disturbances of individuals who become dependent on drugs or alcohol. If a prospective reader is not very much at home with psychoanalytic theory, terminology, and some of the recent psychoanalytic literature, he is likely to find this book tough going.
