Although there is some variability in detail and quality in this 16-author, 18-chapter text, the goal of developing a "book that conveys the fundamentals of clinical chemistry" has been reasonably well achieved. The early chapters outline basic laboratory and analytical procedures in a clear, concise fashion. In the chapters that follow, brief descriptions of basic principles precede the description of laboratory methods. The "basic principles" aspect of this text is perhaps one of its strong points, since most of the chapters convey a reasonably up-to-date yet short review that should prove of use to students of all ages.
