The general internist will enjoy this timely little monograph since it will bring him up to date on the revolutionary changes that have occurred in gastroscopy because of fiberoptics. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is now securely established as a readily acceptable and unquestionably valuable diagnostic procedure that yields information not obtainable with the older semirigid instruments. Flexibility permits turning of the instrument to view the cardia and fundus routinely. The author clearly demonstrates several important features: the new instruments can survey the entire stomach without blind areas, they are far more acceptable to patients even on repeated examinations, and guided biopsy
