Phasic renal artery blood flow velocity was measured in 23 patients, utilizing the Doppler ultrasonic flowmeter telemetry system. The catheter tip containing the transmitting and receiving crystals was located near the ostia of each renal artery. Renal blood flow is pulsatile and characterized by a major systolic wave occurring during ventricular systole. The flow velocity pattern in the renal artery, although phasic, is continuous throughout the cardiac cycle, with a large diastolic fraction. Under normal physiologic conditions renal blood flow is entirely forward without measurable retrograde flow. Ventricular tachycardia resulted in marked reduction in renal blood flow with extreme variations
