We reported previously 20 patients with radiological evidence of pulmonary fibrosis and coexisting antinuclear factor. In one of three patients with histological diagnosis of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis of Hamman-Rich type, IgM deposition was demonstrated in the alveolar septa. Subsequently, we studied three additional patients with tissue diagnosis of interstitial pulmonary fibrosis and serum antinuclear factor. In reviewing the histopathology of the lungs of these six patients, several characteristic changes emerged that might be of pathogenetic significance.
