Studies on the in vitro susceptibility to all antibiotics available and in general use at the time have been carried out periodically with contemporary strains of some of the commoner bacterial pathogens isolated at the Boston City Hospital. Some of the results of these studies are reviewed and correlated with certain properties of the bacteria and with some features of the patients from whom they were isolated. In particular, the effect of the intensive use of antibiotics on the resistance of selected species and on the changing ecology of serious bacterial infections within the hospital are analyzed and discussed.
