To the editor: The excellent report by Gaensler and Kaplan (Ann Intern Med 74:178-191, 1971) suggests a likely association between asbestos exposure and 12 patients with "idiopathic" pleural effusions. In this series one case of mesothelioma was recognized 9 years after the first documented effusion. The authors state that the role of asbestos exposure in the development of mesothelioma has been explored extensively since the initial report by Wagner, Sleggs, and Marchand in 1960 (1).
