To the editor: After reading Mr. Vastyan's article, "Civilian War Casualties and Medical Care in South Vietnam" (Ann Intern Med 74:611-624, 1971), I feel it necessary to react in order to set this matter in perspective. Throughout the paper numerous references are made to the apparent lack of response to civilian health needs by the Department of Defense personnel (physicians). At the risk of sounding callous, I find it unacceptable to draft physicians to serve in this most unpopular war for purposes other than providing medical support for the fighting troops.
