To the editor: I found the article, "Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy Managed with Prolonged Bed Rest" (Ann Intern Med 74:681-691, 1971), to be of interest with respect to the clinical features of the disease. I fail to see, however, how the value of bed rest was demonstrated. Abstinence from alcohol was probably the most important factor relating to what improvement was noted. Perhaps if there were control patients, ambulatory after the first few weeks, the role of prolonged bed rest could have been appreciated.
Would that we had the resources to accommodate all alcoholics with severe medical complications of their disease in
