The second National Methadone Maintenance Conference was held in October 1969 to report on the progress and experience of almost 4,000 heroin addict patients under treatment for from 1 month to 4 years in eastern North America. Methadone Maintenance is the collection of these reports, edited by Stanley Einstein, with the addition of a comprehensive bibliography and a critique of the conference by William R. Martin, M.D., a nonparticipant, from the National Institute of Mental Health Addiction Research Center, HEW.
Although the book jacket promises "guidelines for the development of such (methadone) programs," the reader is instead impressed by the
