To summarize at the outset, this book can be considered the first contemporary definitive monograph in the field of acid-base regulation. It also covers problems of oxygen and oxygenation, although in the past these have been better reviewed than the acid-base field. Although it is too extensive and sophisticated in some respects to be considered a classic textbook, most of the book is devoted to an unusually lucid exposition of basic principles at a level appropriate for both students and practitioners who want a bit more than the usual abbreviated textbook discussion.
