The built-in and inescapable "Catch 22" of contemporary authorship in any field of biology is well illustrated by O'Dell and Moyer's brief, authoritative, and interesting monograph. Although the authors were able to draw on their extensive personal investigative experience, and, although they had access to much information before it was published, the time lag from manuscript to printed book is such that authors cannot avoid being overtaken by the inexorable accumulation of mountains of new data.
