The goal of research in the hereditary degenerative diseases of the nervous system is precise definition of the genetic fault, with the development of genetic control or phenotypic manipulation. Progress in the disorders discussed in this volume, the lipidoses and diffuse scleroses of classic neurology, has been enhanced by the accumulation of new data, even with the imperfect methods of the last century. Now the tools of biochemistry and electronmicroscopy have been directed toward defining these problems; accounts of chemical pathology are being rapidly completed, and descriptions of genetic errors have been started.
