The regulation of pH homeostasis traditionally has been a vexing and difficult subject for medical students and house officers to understand. Yet the topic is of evident importance to the practicing clinician. Dr. Christensen's book is a programmed manual, eminently usable for self-instruction, that serves as a companion to his earlier book, pH and Dissociation (W. B. Saunders Co., 2nd edition, 1964). The author has drawn from his considerable teaching experience in organizing this manual, which sets forth in a lucid and simple manner the biochemical and physiologic principles involved in the regulation of acid-base balance.
