To the editor: We read with interest the article by Dr. H. Conn in the June ANNALS (74:943-945, 1971) on the syndrome of sudden scrotal edema after abdominal paracentesis.
Recently we observed a patient with this syndrome.
The patient was a 46-year-old woman with a long alcoholic history, hepatosplenomegaly, dermatologic manifestations of chronic liver disease, and laboratory data consistent with chronic liver disease. She presented with moderate ascites, and a diagnostic paracentesis was done. Local infiltrative anesthesia was given with a 25-gauge needle, and 100 milliliters of the fluid was removed with an 18-gauge needle and syringe. Thirty-six hours later
