Within another year it is expected that nuclear medicine will be officially recognized as a board-certified specialty. Previous recognition of this field has consisted chiefly of a special certification in nuclear medicine by the radiology board. Although there is a great deal of radiology in nuclear medicine and many radiologists' practices consist largely of the latter specialty, it cuts across a number of disciplines, and it is expected that there will be many physicians entering this new specialty from other fields, particularly internal medicine, hematology, pediatrics, and other established specialties.
