For those of us who have come to depend so religiously on the first edition of Respiratory Function in Disease by Bates and Christie, this second edition is welcome indeed. The many important advances in understanding of respiratory physiology and abnormalities of pulmonary function in the interim make this updating of the material most timely. The addition of Dr. Peter Macklem to the team of authors is very appropriate because much of the advance has been in the contribution of the different-sized airways to the flow-resistance of the tracheobronchial tree, an area in which he has been a lead investigator;
