A concise text bridging the fundamental biochemistry and applied physiology of acid-base metabolism is a welcome addition to the literature. The chemistry of acid-base phenomena is clearly presented in the first few chapters. Three chapters are then devoted to a description of the physiology of acid-base regulation in normal man. These basic concepts form the background for the four subsequent chapters describing metabolic and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis and for a final chapter in which these principles are applied to clinical examples. The presentation of the fundamental biochemical and physiological aspects of acid-base balance are stronger than are the clinical
