THE HL-A system, the major histocompatibility locus in man analogous to the H-2 system in the mouse, has attracted the attention of many different groups. Human geneticists have found in HL-A a highly polymorphic system of yet unknown organization possibly involving gene duplication with linkage disequilibrium. The puzzle remains as to what mechanisms may account for a selective advantage to maintain the polymorphism. Immunologist-cell biologists have been intrigued by the perhaps unique presentation of these antigens in immunological reactions (the high frequency of responding cells to HL-A antigens), their very strong influence on reactions such as the homograft response, and
