To the editor: Grossman and colleagues present further evidence in the June issue (1) of the direct myocardial ionotropic effect of thyroid hormone in thyrotoxic subjects: "The tachycardia seen in our thyrotoxic patients at rest was abolished after beta receptor blockade. This fact, taken together with the exaggerated heart rate response of thyrotoxic subjects to exogenous catecholamines, implicates the beta receptor as the mediator of tachycardia in thyrotoxicosis." This conclusion is misleading and warrants further comment.
