To the editor: In the September 1971 issue a letter from Dr. Bruce R. Ditzion commented on psychotropic drug advertisements. I agree with the concerns of Dr. Ditzion and wish to comment on the sentence in which he asks if alternative approaches might not exist.
American medicine has by and large suggested only one alternative to the use of various psychotropic agents—namely, psychotherapy, which has taken many forms. I submit that up to this time psychotherapy, as we understand it, has not met the mass needs for relief from the various symptoms of anxiety that seem to beset so many
