Experts from various countries, with international reputations as scholars, investigators, and clinicians, came together under the auspices of the Ciba Foundation to lecture, discuss, and challenge the current status of knowledge concerning sensorineural hearing loss. Coherence of the diverse subjects was obtained by the motivating question, "What is the current state of the art and knowledge?" The material covered everything from diagnosis, including the newer audiologic stapedius reflex tests for retrocochlear lesions, to the vast spectrum of causes, ranging from congenital, surgical, noise-induced, drug-induced, traumatic, and various other possibilities.
