In his introductory remarks, R. E. Mancini comments on the "mysterious aura" that since antiquity has surrounded the function of the human testis, a perspective that may contribute to the continuing imposition of fertility control on women rather than men. These published proceedings of a workshop conference held at Positano, Italy, in 1970 are therefore a hopeful sign of further dissipation of the aura; like most published proceedings, however, this collection suffers to some degree from uneven presentation, repetitiousness, and uncertainty of heuristic purpose.
