Assembling a comprehensive multivolumed textbook of neurology is a tremendous undertaking. The value of the undertaking may be questioned by some, in view of the astonishingly rapid advances in the neural sciences, the availability of many textbooks and periodicals of good quality on various aspects of neurology, and the considerable expense. Others may feel that a "modern" handbook of current knowledge and practice, representing the viewpoints of authors from many countries, with a comprehensive bibliography, is desirable.
