An appropriate subtitle for this new and expanded eleventh edition might be this: "With observations upon the disease based upon more than 80,000 cases." Dr. Joslin stopped adding a similar subtitle after his first three editions and 3000 cases. It is apparent that the quality of this eleventh edition is not only due to the contributions of its editors, Drs. Marble, White, Bradley, and Krall, and the obvious competence of the other 26 authors, but derives in large measure from the vast source of diabetic-patient material accumulated at the Joslin Clinic over the past 74 years.
