To the editor: This letter has been evoked by Dr. Norman Cumming's discussion of biopsy in the recently published NIH Conference, "Sjögren's Syndrome—Newer Aspects of Research, Diagnosis, and Therapy" [Ann Intern Med 75:937-950, 1971].
It was of considerable diagnostic and research interest when it was discovered that the ubiquitous minor salivary glands of the lower lip became involved in the same lymphoid infiltrative process that is seen in the major salivary glands. Thereafter, rather than risk facial nerve injury or parotitis by parotid biopsy, it was shown that a simple lower lip biopsy, performed under local anesthesia, provided ample material
