To the editor: The comments that follow concern the paper "A Single Year of Immunotherapy for Ragweed Hay Fever," by Lichtenstein and colleagues, which appeared in the November issue (Ann Intern Med 75:663-671). We have avoided publication regarding the effectiveness of desensitization (immunotherapy), which we nevertheless use as a routine and highly effective therapeutic procedure. We must suffer in silence because there is as yet no valid objective method with which to assess our results. The authors are commended for their efforts to fill the void, because we are all eagerly awaiting the discovery of a reliable method of quantitation.
