I first used the "Barnes Manual" as an intern, finding, along with my colleagues, that for us it was an authoritative and indispensible guide to hospital practice. Seven years (and three editions) later I find the new Manual, although I use it less often, is still the best quick reference for the treatment of acute hospitalized patients.
The new edition seems to be reaching the upper limit of size for a convenient manual. Most sections are current and have been expanded with many new and useful tables. There is a new table of physical findings in the diagnosis of poisoning,
