The acclimatization of the person born and living at high altitude is far from fully understood, and the adaptive changes are proving to be complex, ranging from changes in ventilatory response, rates of blood flow, and hemoglobin, to hyperplasia of the carotid body, altered myocardial metabolism, and even changes in growth rate. This symposium of internationally recognized students of high altitude physiology addressed themselves to three main problems: acute pulmonary edema at altitude, chronic mountain sickness and its effects, and the effects of high altitude on the heart and blood vessels.
