Twenty-six research workers of different disciplines from seven countries participated in this 1971 Ciba Foundation symposium. Nine papers are followed by discussions and, at times, valuable clarifications. The book's scope is greater than the title indicates, for only the introduction, the first paper, and an addendum deal with the diagnosis and definition of asthma. Other papers are on the pathology, pulmonary physiology, and immunologic mechanisms of asthma; chemical mediators of anaphylaxis; and the pharmacology of asthma, the last paper presenting a clinical view.
Two papers, "Lung Growth and Airway Resistance" by Hogg and "Some Physiologic Aspects of Asthma" by Permutt,
